Led by literary translator Ayça Türkoğlu
Students will be introduced to the Turkish language through the medium of pop, learning about the significant role of folk music in the genesis of contemporary music. Students will look at pop, rap and psychedelic folk, learn about the unique role of sound and onomatopoeia in the Turkish language and consider the specific challenges that translating song poses. Students will have the opportunity to translate a Turkish pop classic into English in the style of a contemporary British artist, exploring the ways in which rhyme, rhythm and cultural nuance are employed in both languages.
