Led by translator, writer, poet and artist Khairani Barokka
This workshop will introduce students in the UK to Bahasa Indonesia, using the song and music video for “Aku Cinta J.A.K.A.R.T.A.”, by C’mon Lennon. The students are exposed to understandings of what is now Indonesia as a former British colony, from 1811-1815, in what is called the British interregnum period, and to Indonesia as a coloniser itself within its territories. In this way, Jakarta is also “translated” as a city of many complex histories and cultural dynamics. The focus throughout the workshop will be on translation as creative play, possibilities for decolonial and anti-colonial translation, and translation as multisensorial.
