Led by literary translator and researcher Harriet Phillips
Do pictures speak louder than words? How does the interpretation of a single symbol map across different cultures? In this workshop, students will interrogate the interplay between words and images and translate feminist protest placards from Russia. They will gain insight into the Russian alphabet, pronunciation and grammar before engaging in this creative and critical exercise. Students will analyse gendered language norms in both English and Russian to inform their translations, and will ultimately be invited to reimagine language as a creative force for change.
