Led by researcher and translator Mohini Gupta
In this workshop, students travel between the worlds of English, Hindi and Urdu to translate poetry from South Asia and look at everyday concepts, such as time, from different cultural and linguistic perspectives. The classroom discussion covers language exchanges, language hierarchies, language-based discrimination and Eurocentrism, encouraging students to. understand that—whether it is about speaking English, or about understanding the world around them—there is more than one ‘correct’ way of doing anything. By the end of the workshop, students are equipped with tools to acknowledge their own cultural and linguistic biases, and to challenge and spot stereotypes associated with people’s languages or accents.
